DOG FRISBEE SAFETY RULES
1. Only play with one dog at a time. Don’t expose your dog(s) to dangerous collisions and dog fights.
2. Only play on a level, open space: the surface should not be too hard, and there should not be any obstacles anywhere nearby that could endanger a dog chasing after a frisbee. A soft, springy grass surface is best; sand provides a nice cushiony surface for the dog’s legs, but the grains can get into the discs and cause damage to the dog’s teeth if the frisbee is frequently retrieved from the ground rather than the air.
3. Never throw directly at the dog (except for flips, multiples, and short butterflies).
4. Warm your dog up before training, and cool him down afterwards.
5. Don't overdo it. Quite BEFORE the dog gets tired. A tired dog is at much greater risk of injury. Even a very fit dog gets tired after just a couple of minutes of chasing frisbees. Don’t play for more than a few minutes at a time without a break.
6. Be especially protective of young dogs. Avoid flips, vaults, and high jumps until the dog has matured physically. In competition, doing such moves with dogs younger than 18 months will result in disqualification.
7. Good landings are important. Ideally the dog should land on all four feet after a leap. Some dogs do this naturally, others have a tendency to come down hard on their hind legs only, and need to be taught how to land well.
8. GOOD, ACCURATE THROWING IS CRUCIAL. If your dog has a lot of motivation and drive, he will try his utmost to get the frisbee no matter how badly you throw it, which can lead to dangerous situations. Practice throwing without the dog much more than with the dog. General rule of thumb: 50-100 dogless throws for every throw to the dog, or one hour of throwing practice for you without the dog for every five minutes of throwing to the dog, etc.
9. Likewise, don’t let other people throw to your dog unless you have confidence in their throwing ability.
10. Clean your frisbees after each use and check them for sharp edges that can cut the dog’s mouth. You can smooth these with sandpaper. Discs that show a lot of wear and bite marks should not be used for the dog (you can still practice throwing with them).
